Todd Bettison, who became Detroit’s permanent police chief earlier this year, talks about the city’s pressing crime problem, children getting shot, persuading the public to help identify wanted criminals, and why he doesn’t need President Trump implementing his D.C. crime plan in Detroit.
In a wide-sweeping interview with host Adolph Mongo on "Detroit in Black and White," Bettison comments on Trump’s temporary takeover of the D.C. police department and the deployment of 800 National Guard troops and 120 FBI agents to patrol the streets.
“No, we like it the way it is right now,” Bettison says of his department. “We have a great partnership with the U.S. Attorney, and we’ve always worked very closely with the FBI, the ATF, the DEA. It’s worked fine. I have officers embedded in their task force."
“I got the best department. The men and women of the Detroit Police do an ecellent job. We know this community. We have the complete trust of the community.”
Bettison served as Chief James White's second in command before being named deputy mayor in 2022. In October 2024, he was named interim chief.
